TradingLeagues had an idea and a small group of early users. What it didn't have was a brand, a design system or a way to grow. Over the next year and a half I helped build all three, taking the product past 100,000 signups.
TL;DR
This wasn't just a growth number. It was proof that brand, product and community could scale together, without a single paid ad.
My Role
What I actually did
Some weeks I was designing the app. Other weeks I was running the Discord, briefing creators, writing lifecycle emails or building the referral mechanic that turned users into recruiters.
Everything fed into the same goal: turning early users into a community that brought the next ones in.
The work
Brand

TradingLeagues needed to feel like a sports league, not a finance app, but had no brand system of its own yet to make that case.
I built the identity around energy and competition, leaning into colour and motion instead of the caution most fintech brands default to.
That identity held up across the app, marketing and community as the product scaled past 100,000 signups.
Product

Real time trading and league data on a small screen gets noisy fast, and that noise was the first thing standing between a new user and understanding their standing.
I designed the app to keep one thing in focus at a time, portfolio, leaderboard, so players could read where they stood at a glance.
The product held up to 2,000+ daily paying users at peak, built to scale rather than patched together as it grew.
Growth

There was no marketing budget, so growth had to come from somewhere other than paid acquisition.
I built the Discord community into the actual growth engine, tournaments, AMAs and user led events, alongside referral mechanics and creator partnerships.
Discord grew from 0 to 10,000+ members and helped drive the platform to $2M in annual recurring revenue, with zero paid spend.
Pitch Deck

Growth numbers only matter if the people deciding on funding can actually follow the story behind them.
I designed the investor materials myself, market sizing, revenue growth, the ecosystem and roadmap, translating raw numbers into a deck that reads clearly in one pass.
Those same materials carried the story of 100,000+ signups and $2M in annual recurring revenue into every fundraising conversation.

How people saw it
Another fantasy app nobody's heard of.

Reflections
What this taught me
The Discord wasn't a marketing add on. It was where users felt like they were building the thing with us, and that sense of ownership is what turned users into recruiters.
Since then it's become one of the principles I bring into every project. People bring others in when they feel part of something, not just when they're using it.
